Some of the shutters were in great condition and didn't need to be touched besides sanding and painting. I pulled 4 of them aside to use for the main doors and tore the rest apart. I used the old parts and pieces, as well as some new blocking to build the sides of the furniture piece. These two would end up making the sides of the bottom portion.
Here are a few of the shutter pieces laid out to start being put back together.
The base is coming together. You can see two of the sides of the upper section leaning against the water heater.
Sometimes, I do things simply because I can... and because I think it'll look great - even if you only see it when the doors are open and nothing is inside. Hence why my support system in the back is set on a 45 degree angle. This little feature made it very difficult to install the bead-board backer later on in the build. I'm still glad I did it.
Still coming together...
The basic shell is now complete and I built one of the lower doors to see how it would look with everything else.
The build is complete! It's time for some paint!
I went with the "Ol' Faithful" White Dove (OC-17) for the base coat. I always say, "When in doubt, White Dove." I don't remember the blue I picked, but I watered it down significantly and lightly brushed it on while the base coat was still wet. It allows the colors to "bleed" into each other a little bit and not look like you simply painted a lousy second coat.
I want to give a special shout-out to Open Window Antiques for allowing me to build this project in their space. I didn't have the room at my place and they allowed me to take over a corner of their shop for a week or so for the build.
